Patriots vs. Bills on Monday Night

By Jim Sarkisian

The 2009 NFL opening weekend schedule has been released, and the New England Patriots face off against the Buffalo Bills with newly acquired WR Terrell Owens. This opener is a game of firsts, Owens’ debut as Bills WR and Tom Brady’s comeback from a torn ACL. This game looks to be a great AFC East showdown between these two teams. This year is also the 50th anniversary of the AFL and the 40th anniversary of Monday Night Football. The Bills and Patriots are both “Original 8” teams that played in the AFL, so the NFL deemed it necessary for them to play this game.

While this game brings a lot of history to the table it also brings a lot of questions as well. How will Tom Brady perform after his knee injury? Will T.O. be an issue or a superstar for the Bills? Hopefully, this game will be a blowout on the Patriots end of it with Tom Brady being healthy again. Vegas odds makers have the Patriots as Super Bowl favorites going into next season.

While the Bills have T.O. as their big-ticket free agent, the Patriots bring in a few new faces to bolster this already incredible lineup. New CB Shawn Springs looks to help the always injury ridden defensive back corps. Also with the Patriots signing veteran running back Fred Taylor, they look to create a very deep backfield with Morris, Maroney and Faulk. In addition, the possible trade for Julius Peppers has Patriot Nation in full buzz. Although it is only a rumor, the Patriots have reportedly offered a 2nd round pick for Peppers. Peppers would not only be a huge name in New England, but his presence on an already dominate defensive line will make teams have a new reason to fear the Patriots.

This game should be an excellent precursor of what is in store for the Patriots. Commissioner Goodell and the scheduling committee picked the perfect Monday Night matchup for the first week. I think the Patriots will walk all over the Bills, but this is just speculation for now. We still have all summer to determine how Brady’s injury turns out and how the Patriots will play.

This season looks to be very intriguing for the New England Patriots. Hopefully this game against the Bills will be the first step in a run to a fourth Super Bowl in nine years.

  1. I have to question whether or not Brady will be back at full force this year. Coming back from an ACL tear is going to be extremely difficult...especially with an old offensive line!! T.O. is done!!! If he couldn't win a Super Bowl with the Cowboys he sure is heck not going to win one with the Bills. This years Super Bowl Champs will come from the NFC East...The New York Giants!
